I don't know how one could settle with one Nicholas Ray. God knows I can't. I have a fondness for In a Lonely Place but Johnny Guitar, On Dangerous Ground, Rebel Without a Cause, and Bigger Than Life are never far from my mind. As a matter of fact, I would have a hell of a time narrowing down a best of list for the 1950's. Vincente Minnelli, Alfred Hitchcock, Nick Ray, Joe Mankiewicz, and Elia Kazan were just on fire that decade.

There are a lot of directors working at the height of their powers in the 50s, and not just the few you mentioned. There's Dreyer, Resnais, Visconti, Welles, and Ozu... it's a hell of a decade for cinema. In the 50s/60s, the medium was taken about as far as it can go.

Yeah what I mention is the tip of the iceberg. I regret not mentioning Kubrick for Paths of Glory.

I just find it refreshing that two Abel Gance films are listed here. Well done.

I managed to see RAN. Watching Lord Hidetora in shock as the castle he occupied was being destroyed and his men was being slaughtered was beautiful. Unfortunately, the transfer I saw on par with VHS. Yeesh.
