The Arts & Faith Top 100 Films (and Top 25 Horror Films)

Film lists are everywhere these days, and now we have another one. IMAGE, a journal of literature and the arts, has a sister community of film lovers that goes by the name ARTS & FAITH. This community, around since 1999, has dedicated itself to exploring the intersection of, well, arts and faith. Every once in a while, they release a Top 100 films list, the outgrowth of much conversation and struggle within the community about the place of mystery and meaning in the cinematic medium.

As a member the community, I've had the pleasure of voting for the Top 100, and I think it's probably the strongest Top 100 we've yet produced, marvelously diverse and very accomplished. You can check it out here.

In addition to the Top 100, the ARTS & FAITH community has produced a Top 25 Horror Films list, which is similarly quite strong, and will hopefully be one of many themed lists in the future. That one is right here.

I am minorly disappointed by the horror list. Not one Hammer film ? C'mon !

As for the top 100, again very impressive but The Iron Giant ? Yeesh. Bambi, Dumbo, Fantasia, Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, Lupin vs. The Clone, and several other films can be put in it's place.

Ricardo, there are several of us, including Ryan, who agree with you over The Iron Giant. Others are saying similar things about Paprika, although I haven't seen that one to weigh in (I'm not a cartoon kind of guy but Paprika does look like one I'd like to track down). As with any list created by numbers of voters, nothing is going to be suited to any one person's taste. I've got my own problems with this year's list, but once again I think that overall it represents A&F pretty well.

Don't get me wrong, I think A&F as taste going by this list. I put you all ahead of the idiotic AFI any day of the week.

Well, I nominated and championed for FANTASIA pretty hard. I'm still sad it didn't make the cut (it's a far, far better film than THE IRON GIANT, for sure).

Re: Hammer's absence from the list, I fear this is likely an outgrowth of our community's lack of familiarity with Hammer's output. I was really hoping that we could get THE DEVIL RIDES OUT into that top 25. Ah well.

Yeah, I knew you would be the last person champion Iron Giant. ;)

Next year, start kicking some asses and call me up if you need any help ! :P
